Today's Bible Reading...

March 14 - Joshua 4-6

Chapter 4 - Setting up the memorial stones so that generations to come would not forget the place where the miracle of crossing the Jordan occurred.

1. The people needed to take time to focus on God and remember that it was God who was guiding them. Set aside quiet times to read the Bible and pray.

2. This memorial of 12 stones would be a constant reminder of God's provision. Share your memories of God's love to you with your children. Help their faith to grow.

Chapter 5 - Circumcision at Gilgal - Conquering the Promised Land

5:1 The Canaanites had heard about Israel's great victories through God (2:9-11). They expected the Jordan River would discourage them from entering Canaan. But new they hear that Israel's God has caused them to cross on dry land! They were full of fear and did not have the courage to face the Israelites.

5:2,3 Circumcision was the seal that marked the covenant between God and God's people. The original covenant was made with Abraham. (Cut off the old life - begin a new life with God - Genesis 17:13) The men who were born while in the wilderness are now circumcised. The circumcision was a sign of their complete dedication to God.

5:10 The celebrated the Passover. 5:12 The next day the Manna ceased.

5:13-15 God sent his invisible army to be with Joshua in the battles ahead. God doesn't come to take sides. God comes to take over. The angel of the Lord is there to take charge of the battle.

Chapter 6 - The Fall of Jericho

In some places there were walls up to 25 feet high and 20 feet thick. Jericho was a symbol of power and strength. The destruction of this city would put fear in the hearts of the Canaanites.

6:2 The enemy was already defeated! Christians also fight an enemy that's already defeated! (Satan was defeated by Christ - I John 3:8, Hebrews 2:14,15, Romans 8:37-39)

6:3-5 These are the trumpets used in the religious festivals - their victory would come from the Lord.

Led by the Ark, with trumpets blowing, they circled the city for 7 days. (5:14 says there were invisible hosts of the Lord with them.) At the designated time on the 7th day, at the blast of the trumpets, the walls fell.

1. God gave Joshua specific instructions. God gives us guidance when we ask.

2. God's instructions were clear and manageable. They were able to do them.

3. This was God's fight. Be on God's side, don't expect God to be on your side. Only fight God's battles - the ones he calls you to fight.

4. When you are in partnership with God, expect miracles!

God, I am in awe of your great power. I want to completely dedicate myself to you. Take me and make me be what you need me to be. In the name of Jesus I pray.
Amen.
