Today's Bible Reading...
March 10 Deuteronomy 28
This chapter tells the future of the Hebrew Nation. We can see the Assyrian and
Babylonian Captivities and the Destruction by the Romans. The "eagle" (28:49)
was the ensign of the Roman army. In both the Babylonian and Roman sieges of
Jerusalem, the people ate their own children (53-57). We can picture the Jews'
Dispersion, the
wanderings and persecutions. If you place this chapter beside the history
of the Jewish nation you will have no doubt of the Divine Inspiration of the
writer.
Blessings for Obedience - curses for disobedience! You can't get any clearer
than that!
The Israelites refused to obey God. The Consequences came when they were
defeated and taken away in captivity by Assyria in 722 B.C. Judah fell to
Babylonia in 586 B.C. In A.D. 70 the Roman oppression forced many of the Jews to
flee their homeland and the people were dispersed throughout the nations.
We win and lose by what we choose. The people disobeyed God and paid the
consequences.
God, help me to be obedient to you. Help me to obey all of your commandments.
Help me to follow your guidance and to work for justice and mercy and peace. In
the name of Jesus I pray. Amen.
