Chapter 16 - Ishmael is born
Chapter 17 - God’s covenant is revised.
Chapter 18 - Abraham entertains three angels.
What do we learn from this lesson?
1. Polygamy was not new in Old Testament times. Abram was beyond the child
bearing age. God decreed that Ishmael should be born to provide Abram’s wife a
son, for Ishmael would, one day, father a great nation. He died at the age of
137 years.
2. Abram was called Abraham for he was to become the father of many nations.
God’s covenant with Abraham was the covenant of circumcision of himself and all
of his family and those within his household. This covenant is still the
unbreakable covenant among the Jewish nation today.
3. How many times have angels ministered to us when we are unaware of their
presence? In loneliness, despair, or in life’s fearful situations, these unseen
messengers have brought us hope or other instructions from God.
4. The angel said, “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” How often have we as
Christians faced an insurmountable problem with which we wrestle with all night
only to find that in the morning, God has provided the answer? No matter how
difficult the problem, call upon God. He has the answer that is in the best
interest for you.
5. Abraham’s compassion and love for his family led him to prevail upon God
several times in behalf of his family, but ultimately the end result is the will
to be obedient to the command of the Father and to believe the Promise of God.
To believe God is life - to disbelief God is death. It is our choice.
Prayer:
Help us, O God, to believe You no matter how difficult Your command may be. Help
us to remember that in all Your commands to your people, You have our best
interest at heart. Amen
