Chapter 20 - The Ten Commandments
Chapter 21 - Laws regarding the Treatment of each other
Chapter 22 - Continuation of Laws

What do we learn from this lesson?
1. The Ten Commandments are laws of God by which His people should abide. They are not Ten suggestions leaving each of us to choose which we will obey and which we will overlook in our dealings with God and our fellowmen. Most of our laws today are based on the original Ten Commandments. For from these 10 Commandments thousands of our laws have been gleamed.
2. God also gave judgments. These Moses was to place before the people so that they would respect all the rights of one another. The Golden Rule is not listed here but it would cover many of the judgments placed upon the people. Slavery, treatment of slaves, eye for an eye, parental honor, even swearing at their parents was cause for death. Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, life for life. These are cruel but necessary to keep peace and order among so large a group of people who had no other way to maintain order.
3. Within these judgments, theft is forbidden, duty to our neighbors, and the need for restitution for wrongs must be taken care of. These were needed to keep down local problems.
4. Again, God warns the people that the sacrifice to the gods of the land rather than to Himself would bring complete destruction to all who made such sacrifices against God.

Prayer:
O God, keep reminding us that the commandments, the laws and judgments, which you gave to the Israelites will suffice for today. For if we kept them, we would also enjoy your presence among us. Amen.
