What do we learn from this lesson
1. Even Christian parents some times have bad things happen to their children.
Jacob’s daughter, Dinah was raped. The same thing that is happening often in our
society today and sometimes the abused person does not get the sympathy and help
from Christians or their parents that should be available for them.
2. Dinah’s brothers meant well but they carried out their rage in the wrong way.
They lied first. Then they killed. Is revenge right?
3. Jacob realized that the people were being tempted to follow other gods as are
many today. Jacob gave his people good advice. ‘Put away your strange gods.and
worship the true God.’ We need to heed this warning today and put away the
strange gods in our nation.
4. Jacob received a new name. He would be called Israel from now on.
This is the beginning of the nation of Israel and the israelite people. They are
still called “God’s chosen people” in many places, because God renewed the
covenant with Jacob that he had made with Abraham and Isaac.
5. Jacob returns to Bethel and Rachel dies giving birth to Benjamin.
Jacob and Esau come face to face again at the death of their father.
Prayer:
Our Lord and Father of Mankind, please help us to study this lesson with an open
mind, as if we were reading it for the first time, and help us to hear you say
‘put away any strange gods that you may be serving’ and help us to worship only
the true and living God. Amen
