Questions:
1. What animals were the Israelites allowed to eat? (11:3)
2. How old is a baby boy when he should be circumcised? (12:3)
3. What must a Mother bring for a burnt offering if she can’t afford a lamb for
a sacrifice? (12:8)
4. What should an Israelite do if they found a swelling, rash, or bright spot on
their skin? (13)
5. Who declares a person clean or unclean?
What do we learn from these chapters?
1. Today we are so concerned about diets. God gave instructions to the
Israelites concerning diets but they were for their own protection. God didn’t
want them to eat food that would make them sick, especially without any
refrigeration like we have today. They were allowed to eat animals which chew
the cud and have cloven hoofs. Sea creatures with both fins and scales. Birds
not listed as forbidden. Insects belonging to four classes of the locust family.
2. They were not allowed to eat carnivorous animals because they could transmit
infection when their flesh decayed quickly in a warm climate. Pork was
forbidden. Pigs often carry various parasites. Vermin and predatory birds were
disease-carriers a lot of the time. Shellfish could cause food-poisoning. God
wanted to protect the Israelites from diseases.
3. The purification after childbirth was important as well as the offering to
the Lord for a new baby.
4. The priests were taught how to recognize skin diseases. Quarantine and
preventive procedures were taught.
5. We realize our Precious Lord cared about all the little things in life that
could harm us and taught us how to protect ourselves.
Prayer:
Dear Lord, What a wonderful Father you are! Thank you for all the instructions
you give us to keep us healthy, both physically and spiritually. Help us to heed
your warnings and thank you for Your blessings. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
