Chapter 34 - The Borders of Canaan.
Chapter 35 - The Six Cities of Refuge
Chapter 36 - Marrying within one’s own tribe
What do we learn from this lesson?
1. Canaan was a land of many advantages. It’s climate, soil, and its location .
It was protected by a ridge of mountains which protected it from the hot
desert’s winds and bordered by the Mediterranean Sea. To the north by Libanas
and on the east by the Jordan River. There was copper and iron to be mined.
Surely God had given His people a land that flows with milk and honey.
2. There were six cities of refuge. These were like permanent prisons where
people were kept for life. They were temporary refuges where people could be
spared the wrath of an injured person’s kin, and be held until proper justice
could be administered. Perpetual imprisonment was given to persons found guilty
of murder or even put to death at times. Such laws were to be preventives for
crime but much like today, crime still exists in spite of strict laws of
punishment.
3. To preserve the inheritance of each tribe, daughters were to marry those whom
they chose but only within their own tribe. This was to keep the inheritance of
each tribe in tact. Even if a girl married into another tribe and their
inheritance was taken from its original tribe, at the year of Jubilee, all land
would be returned to the tribe to which it was first given. (Leviticus 25:10-13)
Prayer:
Dear Lord, You have given us many blessings for which we are grateful. We ask
that You would help us to guard carefully these blessings as Your gift to us so
that they may remain with us forever. Amen
