Chapter 19 - The use of the water of separation
Chapter 20 - Moses strikes the Rock
What do we learn from this lesson?
1. The smell of burning flesh must have been very displeasing to the people of
Israel. God had a remedy. Cedar wood and scarlet were cast into the burning fire
to quench the stink of burning flesh. Sometimes, the stench of sin arising among
God’s people but as always, God has a remedy. God’s love, carefully concealed in
a conversion experience to Christ, has always been God’s remedy for the
disturbing feeling of sin that comes within our midst at times.
2. In this lesson, we learn of the water of separation which was for the
purification for sin. This was God’s way of purifying His people in times of
destructive rebellion or ignorance. Perhaps, prayer in this day is God’s way of
purifying us from the sins committed in the course of our every day living.
3. The greatest lesson of this Scripture is the penalty of disbelief in God .
Moses, in anger, struck the rock, when God said ‘Speak’. For this act of
rebellion, neither Aaron or Moses were permitted to lead the Children of israel
into their new home, a good land described as a land flowing with milk and
honey. What a price to pay for disobedience to God’s command. Even in the time
of anger, remember always be patient and in control of yourself.
Prayer:
Dear God, Thank you for providing a cure for our sins. Keep us from rebelling
against you even when we are tempted to do so through our frustrations with
others. Amen.
