Bible Application Numbers 1-2 February 12

Questions:
1. “From __________ years old and upward, all that are able to go forth to war in Israel ; thou and Aaron shall number them by their armies.” (1:3)
2. “But the ___________ after the tribe of their fathers were not numbered among them.” (1:47)
3. “Every _________ of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father’s house far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch. (2:2)
4. “And the children of Israel did according to all that the Lord commanded ___________: so they pitched by their standards , and so they set forward, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.” (2:34)

Chapter 1 - The men of war numbered
Chapter 2 - The organization of Israel

What do we learn from these chapters?
1. The name of this book is derived from the numbering of the people of Israel.
2. Moses is generally accepted as the author of this book.
3. The early chapters deal with organization. No force, of any size, be it military or civil can function without solidly formed organization with appropriate leadership.
4. Israel was a very young nation going to their home land. It was God’s gift to them, but they would have to fight for their land. God would lead but they must fight. This was part of the reason for the numbering of Israel, to judge the size of a possible army. Over 603,000 men were available. Nations generally like to avoid war but to do this, it is even the practice today to be prepared for war but to continue to work for peace.
5. From the tribes of Levi, exemptions were made from their tribe. They were in charge of all that pertained to the care and the moving of the Tabernacle.
6. Each tribe and each tent were located in a specific position, like a town. All was in keeping with God’s plan for his people.
God also has an orderly and perfect plan for His people today. To follow this plan, as He leads, will lead us to a happy and successful life. We do not know God’s whole plan for us, even as Israel did not but day by day, He will reveal His plan to us. Ours is but to follow by faith in the leadership of Christ our Lord and Leader.

Prayer:
O Lord, we ask of Thee only to show us the path You have chosen for us one day at a time, and help us to follow it faithfully. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
